Bucks County Reading Olympics
THE BASICS:
The competition is organized as follows:
Two Reading Olympic teams are placed in a classroom with a moderator, a scorekeeper, and their fans (who are encouraged to cheer, but not to challenge.) Each team is asked 20 questions about the various books they have read. The whole team gets to confer about the answer, although only one designated person can actually respond. There are three rounds – each round is against a different team. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place ribbons are awarded according to how many points the team has earned. Everyone is a winner.
We are limited as to the number of teams that we can enter. We are dedicated to the concept that all 5th and 6th grade students who are willing to make the commitment to read should be eligible to participate, but we will accept students on a first come, first serve basis.

THE BASICS:
- Reading Olympians compete as teams. A team is made up of 8-16 students. Each team has a responsibility for reading 25 specific books. Each team member is required to read at least 7-10 of these books between now and the spring competition. That comes to about 1 book a month! These books are to be read on the student’s own time – they are generally not part of the classroom literature activities. (Belmont students are required to read at home and at school on a daily basis.) Reading Olympic titles are perfect for this independent reading assignment.
- Students not fulfilling their part of the contract by reading their assigned titles will be asked to withdraw from the competition! Remember, this is a team event and their teammates depend on them!
- Multiple copies of Reading Olympic titles are housed in the Belmont library. The Bensalem Library also participates in this program. There is nothing for you to buy.
- The list of books is age appropriate and the difficulty levels vary. We hope that all readers will participate in this non-athletic competition. When a child finishes a book, they take a non-graded Book Adventure computer quiz on the book. This quiz helps us track who is reading which book and it helps the students see how well they understand what they read.
- Families are invited to attend and support their Olympians at the competition. We will provide the bus for students to go to the competition. All participants receive certificates and ribbons, and are winners.
